Great British Design: Spotlight on Denby
I was thinking to write about how Great British design is steeped in history and craftsmanship. Often, Great British design may sound like it will be pricey, but I was pleasantly surprised when I recently discovered affordable collections that do not compromise on style or quality at Elys Wimbledon.
Denby is a craft classic pottery brand which has been handmade in England since 1806. Their designs are beautiful and recognisable too. Production of salt-glazed pottery started in Denby in 1809 directly from the site of the clay bed. Over time, the business grew and their designs of stoneware bottles became essential pieces for preserves, pickles, medicines and even ginger beer in in the 1800s.
Since then the range of pottery pieces has grown as has their prestige.
Denby has recently revealed their new range - Denby Impression, a range of mugs, plates, bowls, coasters, trays and platters. The feel of this range I adore. The stoneware is chunky and feels durable and strong. The clay is sourced locally to Denby and produces a gorgeous finish of stoneware, which is also microwave, dishwasher and freezer safe. It also comes with a 10 year guarantee.
The Denby Impression collection is made of different colours but the hues and tones of each colour have been chosen to work perfectly with each other. This is one of the reasons I was drawn to this collection. You can mix and match the blue, charcoal, cream and pink colours and they all complement each other so well.
My top picks from the collection have to be the stoneware tray and the large mugs. The tray is the perfect size to hold the cup and, of course, a cookie to dunk in your tea!
I chose the Impression pink hexagon large mug and the charcoal tray as the first pair. Then the Impression cream tray and the Impression charcoal diamond large mug as the second. The colours work so well together so I can mix and match when I’m serving my friends and family a cup of tea and a slice of cake.
These are stunningly designed pieces which are not only useful but will last and remain a classic for years.
